Students observed the reactions and properties of unknown powders, similar to the observations
of unknown liquids, to use in identification, as they would do in forensic science. The four
powders we observed were baby powder, baking soda, baking powder, and corn starch. Each of the
powders was reacted with iodine, vinegar, and water. Children used their observational skills
to describe the appearance, texture, smell of the powder and if anything happened to the
liquid when it was added to the powders.
