Clock Wise: What time is it?

Topic: What time is it?
Time Duration:30 minute lesson, 45 minute activity.
Grades: K-3th

Class began with an example of a clock displayed on the chalkboard. The instructor asked the students questions about telling time. The instructor distinguished the hour hand and the minute hand. The instructor asked the students questions about the intervals between minutes. Some students knew the answer, but some did not. The instructor explained that the minute hand increases by five until it gets to fifty-nine, then it starts over again. After the students understood how to tell time, they made clocks (see lesson plan). Each student designed a clock to take home and practice telling time with. The students got in groups and asked their partner "What time is it?" If the partner answered correctly, they would receive two minutes of free computer time. The group activity last twenty minutes. The students then completed a time worksheet from the interactivate website. Once the worksheets were complete, the students spent their remaining time practicing telling time on the interactivate website.
