Wednesday’s lesson also dealt with graphs. Hanley began with a short lesson on four different types of graphs: line graph, bar graph, histogram, and pie chart and what each graph is useful for displaying. Students completed a short worksheet with a partner that gave a hypothetical situation to be graphed and asked which graph would be best.

For the rest of the class, student worked on an activity using graphs and thinking about the type of data that goes with different graphs. They were given an excel of the top 50 ranked roller coasters in the US that included blank columns for speed, length, height, drop, inversions, cost to build, and material. The students were split into 4 groups and each group was assigned one of the four graph types. The groups had to determine which of those blank columns, for which they could find data, would work well with their type of graph. Then, they were given a rollercoaster database website where they could search for the information they needed. Once they had found all of the data they needed, they were to create a graph using either an Interactivate activity (Graphit, Circle Graph, Histogram, and Bar Graph) or Excel. Based on their data, each group gave a very short presentation of their graph and a certain type of roller coaster they would recommend based on their graph.
