The second day of class, Bethany introduced plotting coordinates on a graph. The students practiced plotting coordinates on graph paper. Working in pairs, they graphed a shape on graph paper and then found their partner’s coordinates for the shape. Then, they checked the coordinates on an activity called Ordered Simple Plot. If the coordinates made the same shape as was on the paper, then all of the points had been identified correctly. Then they came up with their own functions and input, and their partner found the output and graphed it. In this way, functions were introduced for those who hadn’t heard of functions yet. After they had practiced graphing on paper, they used the Graphit activity on Interactivate to experiment more with functions and coordinates.

The students played a game called Maze game which also dealt with coordinates. Finally, they returned to graphit and experimented with different types of functions to see what kind of shapes they made (i.e. linear, quadratic, etc). Students shared their observations with the class and discussed them.
