In the first half of the class, Ismael introduced Google Earth and Google Sketchup (note: students love sketchup). The idea was to teach the kids to take the data from Google Earth and to create images out of the data, of which we did the opposite in the afternoon. In the second half of the class, Emily taught the students about data visualization. The students took data from a spreadsheet in Excel and made a graph of the data. When the graph was viewed in 3d, there was a shape, and as the students learned how to change the factors of visualization of the data, they could make out the code in the data, which was a picture of a frog. The students also looked at data and equations in Gnuplot, using the terminal to write instructions to view the data in different ways. The students were given websites to look at elevation levels of the earth and extract this data to graph in Gnuplot. Lastly we looked at Grapher, and after the students were taught how to graph equations in it we let them play around with the application, which they enjoyed.
