First the students got an introduction to computer graphic design as a whole. Then Heather taught about Vector verses Bitmap. The students were introduced to Inkscape and learned how to create basic shapes and edit them. Still using Inkscape they learned about paths, how to use text, how to trace images, and how to edit SVG language by hand. In the afternoon the students had an introduction to Gimpshop. Students learned how to modify images using the tools provided in Gimp. They manipulated an image by copying parts of it, pasting into new layers, and rotating. To do this, they utilized many different selection tools, including the free select, fuzzy select, and scissor select. Students also learned how to adjust colors, saturation, and value of images, utilizing the curves too, levels tool, hue/saturation, and brightness/contrast. They learned how to use guides to divide an image, then use the copy and paste into new document feature to create slices appropriate for creating a web page. In this image, they also added layers of text and saved in a web-appropriate format. Students were also given free time and a selection of images to apply the concepts they had learned that day.
