The second day of Medicine and Biosciences began with a lesson in Pharmacokinetics, or how drugs move through a person's body. The class first did a model using STELLA®, model showed how a drug stays in certain parts of the body longer than others and what factors that make it that way. It also showed what levels of certain drugs different people need based on different factors. This is because once a certain threshold a drug doesn't have any more effect on what its fighting, this threshold is reached faster in some people than others so they don't need as high doses. Using a computer to find what dosage a patient needs is a lot better than trial and error, in which case somebody could become sicker. The students then modified the model on their own.
In the afternoon the class unfortunately was left in the dark. Due to utility working down the street Shodor was out of power, but this didn't stop the class. They instead did a short lesson on how the students would be expected to present their individual projects on the last day of class. Shortly thereafter the power returned and the class was back in business. The class then did a model of a dog's heart, showing what each part does and how much it is required to do based on different variables. Lastly the students were introduced to a STELLA based program that showed how cells flow through the body.
