Making Liquid-Solid

Topic: Observation
Time Duration: 5 minutes set up, 1 hour 35 minutes lesson, and 5 to 10 minutes clean up time. Total: 1 hour 50 minutes
Grades: K-7

The instructor set up the two activities on opposite ends of the table for easy transition from one activity to another. When the class started, the instructor asked the students to give some examples of when a liquid can change into a solid. The students helped to create a liquid ice cream mixture by placing the ingredients into a bag. The class then assembled into a group to turn the liquid ice cream mixture into a solid. (See lesson plan). The students tossed the bag around, while the instructor explained what was happening inside the bag. After a while, the solid ice cream was formed and the class enjoyed the great tasting ice cream. While the students ate ice cream, the instructor prepared for the slime activity. The instructor explained how glue and Borax washing powder make an instant chemical bond. Each student was given a different ingredient to add to the slime. The slime was then evenly distributed amongst the students. Each student played with their slime, and later, they took the slime home.

Clean up was easy with a little warm water. The students and the instructor had a lot of fun.
