How do you Know? Prove It

Topic: Observation
Time Duration: 1 hour
Grades: K-7

This lesson was a lesson to get the class used to being with the instructor and each other. The instructor introduced herself and got to know each child by asking their name, grade, what they liked and whether they liked science or math. After introductions the class was given two different pictures to look at for a short amount of time (about three minutes).

The instructor then collected the pictures and asked detailed questions about what they had seen. The students had some difficulty recalling details to answer some of the harder questions, but when they got stuck, the instructor would go over the answer with the class. The students practiced observation using the forensics materials from Shodor's website (see lesson plan), and the instructor explained the importance of observing carefully. She also explained about different careers which use observation and why it is important to be accurate.

The instructor summarized the lesson again and asked questions to make sure the students understood what had been taught. Each student explained a different part of the lesson to the class and instructor.
