WD Hill Fall Workshops Grades K-3 10:00am to 12:00pm

Date: 10/17/06
Topic for workshop: Pattern Recognition
Instructor: Lateasha Shirer
Number of Students: 12

1. Provide a brief overview of the workshop (i.e. purpose, activities and materials):
This lesson is designed to teach the younger students patterns while giving the older students a view of different kinds of patterns. The class used a pattern applet from the interactivate website. The class also played a rhythm game to identify different patterns.
2. Did the students engage the workshop and ask questions?
The students were able to participate in the rhythm game. Each student was able to match patterns and continue the sequence using the interactivate applet online.
3. Did the students seem to learn and understand the material? For example, can the students explain what they learned?
The younger students were so excited to learn about patterns. They learned new vocabulary words from the class discussion. The older students knew about patterns, but they were not clear on the vocabulary.
4. Is this material appropriate for the K-7 grade level? Is it more appropriate for K-3 or 4-7, and why?
This material is appropriate for younger student. Older student's should have already had training or learned about patterns. Kindergartens are a good age group for this lesson. It's an easy lesson for the younger students to learn and they can get excited about learning something new.
5. How do the materials and activities apply to the science and math the students are currently learning?
Patterns can be found in math and science. Learning how to identify different patters will help the students look for patterns in different subjects. Patterns can make learning easier.
6. Additional comments:
Having all students around the same age can make the lesson a little easier on the teacher. Don't teach this lesson to students who are more advanced than others. Try making up your own rhythm game for the students. It makes the class fun and interesting!
