Instructor Evaluations: WD Hill Fall Workshops Grades K-7 4:00pm to 6:00pm

Date: 11/7/06 Topic for workshop: Coordinate plane system Instructor: Lateasha Shirer Number of Students: 2(grades 4-7)

1. Provide a brief overview of the workshop (i.e. purpose, activities and materials):
The purpose of this workshop was to teach the students how to plot point s on a coordinate plane and how to read points from a coordinate system. I drew examples on the board so that once the class began, the kids would be able to see visually what I was explaining to them. I used the "Simple Maze Game" and the "Maze Game" for the kids to play with. We went through the "Simple Maze Game" together as a class so that the students could get an understanding of how to place points and how to read ordered pairs correctly.
2. Did the students engage the workshop and ask questions?
The students really got into the participation of the applet. They were asking questions about how to move the monster around and they were really excited about plotting the points so that the monster could find his way home.
3. Did the students seem to learn and understand the material? For example, can the students explain what they learned?
In order for me to know whether the students understood the lesson I had them challenge themselves on the maze applet by themselves with no additional help from other students. They breezed right through the applet with great understanding while constantly increasing the difficulty level.
4. Is this material appropriate for the K-7 grade level? Is it more appropriate for K-3 or 4-7, and why?
The material was appropriate for the age group and grade group that I taught. The kids really understood it. The material was new to them and they had never learned about the coordinate system before. For them it was fun to learn and apply these concepts using an applet.
5. How do the materials and activities apply to the science and math the students are currently learning?
The activities applied to math. The coordinate system was something that they will go over in more depth later in school, but it was helpful for them to be introduced to the basics of the Coordinate System.
6. Do you have any suggestions for improving the lesson plans or activities to be more appropriate/effective for this age group?
As of right now I have no suggestions for improvements that will make it more effective to the students because it was really effective as it is.
