Instructor Evaluations: WD Hill Fall Workshops Grades K-7 4:00pm 6:00pm

Date: 10/31/06 Topic for workshop: Fun with Science: liquids to solids Instructor: Lateasha Shirer Number of Students: 5(grades k-7)

1. Provide a brief overview of the workshop (i.e. purpose, activities and materials): The purpose of this workshop was to explain how liquids turn to solids. We made Ice Cream and Slime. The Ice Cream led to a discussion about how salt melts ice and makes the ice water so cold it freezes the ice cream mixture, because it lowers the freezing point of water. The slime showed how when Borax is mixed with water and glue, it forms an instant bond with the glue to make the slime.
2. Did the students engage the workshop and ask questions? The students were able to form the Ice Cream by shaking a bag and making the liquid into a solid. They asked questions about how the Ice Cream gets solid.
3. Did the students seem to learn and understand the material? For example, can the students explain what they learned? The students really understand the material the way that I teach it. The students were able to explain what they learned from the class to their parents and me.
4. Is this material appropriate for the K-7 grade level? Is it more appropriate for K-3 or 4-7, and why?
I believe that the material is acceptable to all grades, but the way the lesson is taught (the way a person explains it) would have to be changed. All grade levels will enjoy learning and completing the activity because the ending results are the best part of learning the material.
5. How do the materials and activities apply to the science and math the students are currently learning?
The material is a little more advance for the younger kids but they understand it based on the way that I explain it. The children seemed to have a good grasp on what they learned.
6. Do you have any suggestions for improving the lesson plans or activities to be more appropriate or effective for this age group?
I use different techniques to teach the materials that are usually presented to the older children. I am able to present the material in ways that the children are able to learn.
7. Additional comments: Most Shodor Material can be taught to younger kids, but the way that the lesson is taught has to be alternated. And altering the lessons to get younger kids to understand them is my mission!
