Todays forensics workshop was about ink chromatography and handwriting analysis. Dylan started by explaining what ink chromatography is and followed with a hands-on activity in the break room. Students hung coffee filter paper with marker on it from a stirring straw set on top of a cup filled with alcohol so to allow the alcohol to be absorbed up the coffee filter paper without submerging the mark in the alcohol. After several minutes, the alcohol carried pigment from the mark up the coffee filter paper, creating a streak. The students then performed chromatography on the pens used to write notes, which were evidence in the class ongoing investigation. This was performed the same way as the markers and inks were compared to that of the culprits note. After the break, the students learned about analyzing handwriting. They first learned about the elements of handwriting: form, line quality, arrangement and content. Students practiced analyzing handwriting by examining their own signatures using an application called Gimp. Next, students analyzed notes of the two suspects along with the note of the culprit. They analyzed the handwriting of each. Finally, students ranked their suspects as primary or secondary using evidence they had collected so far. Dylan reminded them to consider the relevance of evidence when ranking suspects as primary or secondary.
