Today the kids got an introduction to genetics and the lac operon. They learned what a lac operon is, a set of genes that produces lactose-digestion proteins and how it helps humans digest lactose. They also learned about the regulation mechanism of a lac operon and how it can stop producing lactose-digesting proteins when there is no lactose.

We also taught them about the circulatory system and how blood is able to transport oxygen from the lungs to the whole body. They learned about the health problems that they would have if they had high blood pressure or an abnormally high heart rate. Finally, the kids did an activity in which they modeled how a heart works. They were really excited about this part and were able to learn from hands-on experience.
