Day 1
In the beginning of the day Ebonee and Jenna began the workshop by introducing themselves as interns of Shodor and telling them about Shodor's history and mission. They then started things of by splitting the class up by their favorite deserts; cake, pie, ice cream and other. In their groups students began to get to know each other, they had to ask each other questions about themselves then introduce their partner to the rest of the class. After the icebreaker, Jenna talked about modeling. She used an example of pen dropping and asked what it could model. They then learned how tying knots in a rope could model a computer process, and how two processes working together could accomplish more than one process. Jenna and Ebonee discussed the different things that models can do.
After lunch they started to talk about what makes a vehicle efficient such as aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. The students collected data from some of the vehicles in the parking lot, then started to talk about how to use that data to find gas mileage. The students then talked about the properties of the hybrid and other cars, that make them better for the environment and the consumer.
After the break they played a game, to discuss why people like hybrids more than conventional cars. Then they discussed why people didn't like hybrids; such as cost and selection, why people didn't use diesel. They also talked about why gears on cars and bikes work and what they are really used for. They used a car simulation to learn more about gears and gear ratios, and how they work. This activity concluded day one of Shodor Scholars Program.
