What Can We Learn?

This model has taught me a few things about dealing with outbreaks of diseases. First of all, herd immunity is vital to protecting those that are vulnerable in our communities. Young children, elders, and people with immune system diseases rely on the herd to protect them from diseases. However, even if a few people who are able to get vaccination refuse vaccination, they compromise the herd immunity and cause the vulnerable people to be in danger.

Another thing I learned is how geographical barriers act as a way to quarantine diseased areas. This can be applied to real world scenarios by limiting the amount of entrances and exits to areas with outbreaks. People who enter and exit should be put through a clinic to make sure that they are healthy and have their vaccinations up to date before they can enter or exit. Third, I learned that population density plays a large factor in the spread of disease. More dense areas spread disease much quicker, so dealing with outbreaks in dense cities requires quicker reaction times. This means that vaccination and other methods of prevention are especially important in these areas.
