Candid Student Reports

The following (emails) were written by members of the Scientific Programming class during the sixth session of the program. Some elements may have been removed for various reasons, but the text that remains is in the student's own words.

This program was more challenging, I enjoyed even
though I didn't exactly do it correctly.
Joshua

Class was fun and informative again today.
Robbie

Today we worked with computer generated random numbers.
Computers actually generate pseudorandom numbers. We used
these computer generated numbers to run simulations of
rolling a 6-sided dice, and drawing cards from a deck.
I got both programs to work and the distribution for my
virtual die was close to predicted. I tested the card
drawing program by having it count how many times the
first two cards drawn were both 2s. I got a value very
close to the predicted probability from this test.
Daniel

Random generation fun... Today we looked at how
computers randomly generated stuff and then wrote
programs that involved random generation. We had the
option of doing it in either perl or java, and we picked
perl.
Albert

Once again, Le'roy was absent. I was tired and slightly
sick with what may or may not be an actual illness. It
was not so hot this time which is a good thing.
Samuel

Today we designed a program that rolled a six sided dice
a certian number of times. Then we crearted a program
that drew cards from a deck without drawing the same card
twice.
Jalena

Today we learned about how computers make random numbers
and we made a couple programs that involved using a
random number generator. We decided to do all the
programming in perl since it was the most fun.
Conrad

Today we learned a lot about java and we did two
programs: dice rolling and card picking. It was
challenging, but fun. We can't wait until next week.
