Candid Student Reports

The following (emails) were written by members of the Modeling Your World during the first session of the program. Some elements may have been removed for various reasons, but the text that remains is in the student's own words.

Today was really really fun. We tried to figure
out problems and stuff like that.

Kati
Today was good. We had a guest lecturer who talked
about SunRayce '99 and magic squares, and showed us
a prototype for a calculator he was helping design.
Then, we learned about ciphers and decoding.

Andrew and Osvaldo

Today was very fun. A mathematician came in and
talked more about abstractness. Afterwards we
worked on cryptology. I had a lot of fun and I
learned a lot. Do you know how to change the roman
numerals 23 over ( or divided by) 7 = the roman
numeral 2 into a pretty good approximation? I do!
You can move any of the lines that make up the
numeral to another location. When you find it out
you'll feel quite dumb. Ha! Ha!

Ari

Today was the last day of Math Exploration. We did
magic squares. I figured out one by myself. Then
we had break. When we came inside we figured out
codes. Today was a lot of fun.

Michelle

Today, we talked with a scientist who was an ex- Navy
Seal! He told us about "Magic Squares" an how to solve
them. He also informed us about a solar-powered car
race that was currently going on.

Andrew and Bruce
Today we had Dr. Dan, uh, Warner, an ex-Navy SEAL,
teach us. He had us fill out magic squares and started
us out on a magic triangle. Then, with Jon and Adam, we
had a short course in cryptology, the "art" of making
and breaking codes. At the end, we got t-shirts and
certificates. THE END.

John
Today in the after noon we did this thing with dr. dan
warner it was more fun than the other guest lecturer and
we did more hands on thing it was the bomb.
