This calculator calculates the type of stability, given the observed (or environmental) lapse rate. We can compare this lapse rate for any given day to the "standard" dry and moist lapse rates shown in the table below. Based on a comparison of these values, we can determine how stable the atmosphere might be.

The IrYdium Project, and CREATE Project, develop educational software that can be integrated flexibly into introductory chemistry courses nationwide. Our goal is to create simulation-based learning environments where college and high school students can approach chemistry more like practicing scientists and see interesting real-world applications of key concepts.

The goal of this module is to give students an understanding of the one-dimensional Fourier Transform, both mathematically and computationally, with a focus on finding periodicity in data. To motivate the study of the Fourier Transform, the students will be presented with certain application areas, such as searching for periodic patterns in CO2 data and differentiating between two sound signals using their power spectra. Students will explore some computational issues and challenges of the Discrete and Fast Fourier Transforms.

Epidemiology is the study of infectious disease. Infectious diseases are said to be "contagious" among people if they are transmittable from one person to another. Epidemiologists can use models to assist them in predicting the behavior of infectious diseases. This module will develop a simple agent-based infectious disease model, develop a parallel algorithm based on the model, provide a coded implementation for the algorithm, and explore the scaling of the coded implementation on high performance cluster resources.

This is the home page of The Orbitron - a gallery of ray-traced atomic orbital and molecular orbital images constructed with POV-Ray. It contains: 1) Electron-cloud and surface representations of atomic, hybrid, and molecular orbitals; 2) 2- and 3-D graphs of the wavefunctions associated with atomic and hybrid orbitals; 3) Animations of the electron density in atomic and hybrid orbitals, showing their inner lobes and nodal structure; 4) Rotatable, zoomable electron-cloud representations of atomic, hybrid, and molecular orbitals; 5) Radial distribution functions for atomic orbitals; 6) The equations for atomic and hybrid orbital wavefunctions; and 7) Animations of the interactions of bonding and antibonding orbitals in hydrogen and nitrogen.

MPI is a de facto standard specifying the interface and functionality of a message-passing library, a collection of routines for facilitating communication (exchange of data and synchronization) among the tasks in a distributed memory parallel program. MPI is the first standard and portable message passing library that offers good performance.
