Phases, Phase Changes, Heat, Temperature and Particle Motion

This multimedia site features a series of slide shows on all of the topics listed in the title link. The relevant slide shows are split into two chapters (1 and 2) and several lessons per chapter. Links to all of the chapters and lessons are at the bottom of the page. Key Concepts: States of Matter, Phase Transitions, Molecular Interactions, Temperature, Heat

To view the slides in this tutorial, click on the left and right arrows. Note the link to chapter 2 and the associated lessons are at the bottom and to the left of the page.

Exploring States of Matter

This project will take you through a macroscopic and microscopic view of each of ice, water, and gas (water vapor). Users will learn how water molecules can transform among the phases and then take a quiz to test their knowledge. Key Concepts: Molecular Interaction, States of Matter

Click on each of the labeled links to view the animation for that concept. Once in the animation, click the "Magnify xx" link to zoom in on the substance.

Phase Change

This applet will allow you to explore the molecules in a substance as it changes phase from a solid to a liquid to a gas. As the molecules heat up and move more quickly, their kinetic energy will be displayed on a graph to the right. Key Concepts: Latent Heat, Temperature, States of Matter, Molecular Interaction, Phase Changes

Click on the "Download & Launch" link to download this applet. When the applet opens, you can click "Start heating" or "Start cooling" to run the model. You can also right-click on the model itself to change many of the basic properties, such as view size and gravity.

Solids, Liquids, and Gases

An interactive model allowing users to observe solids, liquids, and gases at both microscopic and macroscopic levels. Users will observe the degree of intermolecular interaction and molecular movement throughout the phases. Key Concepts: Phase Transitions, States of Matter, Molecular Interactions

To begin, click "Launch Activity". A popup box will appear select ok and the acitvity will load.
