What is a Shodor Activity?

A Shodor Activity is an interactive computer application usually in the form of java applets. These programs are intended to teach students about a particular concept through hands-on experimentation. Students can learn using these activities either from group work or individual investigation. Also, most activities are follow lessons and come with handouts, tables, worksheets, etc.

Outline of a Shodor Activity

Activities on the Shodor website are generally in the form of java applets. These applets are interactive programs that can be accessed on the web. Each Shodor activity has the tabs: Learner, Help, and Instructor at the top of the page to guide the user through the activity. Here is a general description for each of those links:

  • Learner Tab - The purpose of the activity, written for the learner, includes:
    • Ideas behind the activity
    • Classroom Resources - Includes links to worksheets, lessons, and sample discussions all related to the activity

  • Help Tab - How to use the activity, includes:
    • General Explanation of how the applet is used
    • Controls and Outputs - Step by step guide to every interactive tool in the activity

  • Instructor Tab - Why the activity is useful, includes:
    • Place in the Mathematics Curriculum - How the applet is applicable to mathematical lessons in the classroom
    • Standards Fulfilled - Provides the standards which are addressed in the activity
    • Be prepared to: - Possible problems or questions that may arise when using this activity in a classroom environment
    • Classroom Resources - Includes links to worksheets with questions related to the activity
    • Associated Interactivate Modules - Lists links to related lessons and discussions
