The Effect of Exercise on Endorphin Release

AgentCubes Model

This agent model is a visual representation of how exercise and geographical location affects the amount of endorphins released by our brains. In my model, the blue block is a pool, the red block is a gym and the gray and black blocks are a dance studio. The pool signifies swimming, the gym signifies HIIT (high intensity interval training) and the dance studio signifies dancing. According to my research, out of those three exercises, swimming releases the least amount of endorphins, dancing releases the most and HIIT releases an amount in the middle.

The first two pictures provided on the right are of the two world I created. The first one shows the apartments farther away from all three of the exercising facilities. Out of those three facilities, the apartments are closest to the gym. In the second world, I moved the apartments in the middle of all three of the exercise facilities and moved the dance studio a little bit closer to the apartments.

My hypothesis was that the geography of where people live and how the exercise facilities are placed will have a big impact on the endorphins that are released by those people. Think about it, if someone lives closer to a dance studio than a pool, they would be more likely to take part in dancing rather than swimming. This would cause them to have a higher amount of endorphin release than someone who lived close to the pool or gym.

You can see this hypothesis being proved by the third picture on the right. Logically, it would make sense to see that over time, the population has the most amount of high endorphin release people. This is because people with high endorphin release take longer, release endorphins for a longer amount of time, before going back to normal. However, looking at the graph you can see that the medium endorphin leveled people are the highest in the population. This shows that even though the gym is less effective for endorphin release, because of the way the apartments are placed, it makes up for a majority of the population.

In the second world I created, I positioned the apartments to be closer to all three of the facilities and closest to the dance studio. The graph for the second world shows thatwhen the apartments are closest to the dance studio, the population has the most amount of high endorphin levels, followed by medium and then low.

Why is this Important?

How is this conclusion relevant to the world we live in and how can we implement it into our lifestyle? Having high endorphin levels has been proven to have many positive effects on the mind as well as the body. They range from educing pain to an heightened feeling of happiness. It can even help you lose weight by boosting your metabolism and curbing your appetite. My agent model shows that someone can gain a much higher chance of attaining these health benefits just by choosing the right place to live.
