Hands-on Science at STEP
STEP is a year-round program that provides an enriched science and technology education experience for over 1700 rural middle school students. Activities are centered on problem solving, scientific method, and computer and Internet use. A group of 160 students from Harnett Central Middle School are selected each year to participate in Saturday morning hands-on labs that focus on herbal medicines, cell or molecular biology, physics, and analytical techniques. These same topics are available to 45 Harnett County middle school students during a weeklong summer session. Each summer, six of the most talented students participate in a summer research experience with Campbell University research faculty. The program also provides a one week computer based, probeware workshop in the summer. STEP into Science workshops will provide training for 48 teachers and 240 students over a two year period.
