How to configure Eudora to use APOP

Step 1: Set up a different email password

If you are comfortable with UNIX, ssh in to your scan account, and issue the 'popauth' command. popauth is similar to the passwd command, except that instead of being a command to change your UNIX password, it is a command to change your APOP password. 'popauth' will ask you to enter and then verify your password.

PLEASE DO NOT USE THE SAME PASSWORD AS YOUR LOGIN PASSWORD. APOP does not encrypt messages, it just uses an alternate password, so that if intercepted, the only thing compromised is your mail.

Step 2: Set your authentication scheme in Eudora to APOP

Go to the Special Menu. Select Settings. Select the Checking Mail setting. Under authentication scheme, select APOP.

Step 3: Set your password in Eudora

Go to the Special Menu. Select change password. It will LOOK like you should enter your old password, and then give and confirm your new password. It only looks that way. Enter your new email password created with popauth three times.

Eudora will complain and say that it cant connect to the server. Just say OK, then check your mail again. If everything is correct, you should be able to read your mail. And if you store your old messages on the server, you will read lots of mail, as Eudora no longer remembers which messages you have read. It will be OK next time you read it.
