B4. Project Organization

B4.7 Dissemination and Development

The Shodor Computational Science Institute will seek to extend the impact of its educational reform agenda by working with the participating faculty to effectively disseminate the materials, tools, and techniques among their fellow faculty at their home institutions, at neighboring institutions, and to the undergraduate science, engineering, and education communities at large. We also believe that our modular design will allow us to develop and add subject to supplemental funding additional workshops focusing on social science and the life sciences. The SCSI staff will continue to disseminate the results of this project nationally by making presentations at conferences, by providing access on our server, and by sending out an electronic and hard-copy newsletter to all departments at all schools in the partnering consortia.

B4.7.1 On-campus Seminars and Working Groups

We fully expect the participants to return home ready and excited about helping their peers to incorporate computational tools, techniques, and technologies into their courses. We will encourage the faculty to give seminars, to speak to other departments, and to foster the development of interdisciplinary working groups on their campuses. These efforts can be assisted by SCSI staff during one of the site visits anticipated as part of the project follow-up. We encourage the faculty to engage in outreach activities to other university and community college faculty and to K-12 teachers.

B4.7.2 Materials and Curriculum Development

Faculty who have attended Shodor workshops have been successful in leveraging their new experience and training to secure campus or external funding for curriculum development and for computational instrumentation. SCSI staff will assist participants in identifying resources and preparing proposals to secure funds to implement computational approaches in their courses. All of the materials from the course are made available on a web server and an anonymous ftp site at Shodor.
