B4.8 Facilities, Housing, and Social Events
The undergraduate faculty members who attend SCSI will enjoy computational
and scientific environments that are likely to be significantly better
than what they have at their home institutions. The practical consequence
is that the faculty would live at their workstations if given the
chance. Part of the attraction is that the faculty enjoy working together
and they interact well with the other computational teams; the interdisciplinary
nature of the Institute fosters these positive interactions. Our current
plan is to hold the workshops at the new Shodor Training facility in Durham,
NC, which includes a network of 200MHz PowerMacintoshes, high powered graphics
workstations, and data servers connected via T1 to the Internet backbone.
We have also been invited to hold these workshops on the campuses of partners,
including Furman and NCCU. The final sites will be picked to be maximally
convenient the participants so as to minimize travel costs. For each of
the several alternatives, there are outstanding computational labs, classrooms,
and local housing arrangements to make the workshops attractive, comfortable,
and productive.
Social Activities. To facilitate the social interactions of the
Institute staff, participants, and guest speakers, the Project Director
and staff will coordinate activities such as cultural excursions, gallery
visits, sporting events, picnics, and other relaxing activities.
