The changing nature of society with its increased emphasis on mathematical literacy for all students has led to a national reexamination of mathematics education. The Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) have responded to the challenge of a quality contemporary mathematics education by developing a powerful and enriched mathematics curriculum.

DoDDS has identified four global mathematics goals for all students:

  • All students will have equal access to quality education,
  • All students will have an opportunity to become mathematically literate,
  • All students will have an opportunity to become mathematically powerful,
  • All students will have the opportunity to become informed citizens capable of understanding issues in a technological society.

In order to provide a framework for students' achievement of the goals, DoDDS educators have developed Guidelines and Expectancies for the K-12 mathematics program. The Expectancies follow nationally recognized standards and are based on educational research. The Expectancies reflect relevant mathematical content and effective teaching strategies.
