My experience with science and math
My experiences in science come mainly from my background of volunteering at the Museum of Life And Science, the MODELS program at the Museum and the brief time I spent volunteering at the Eno Animal hospital. From volunteering at the museum and the Eno Animal Hospital I became aquatinted with animal science. The MODELS program associated me with the scientific method and raised my social and group skills as we did research for the science based project that we were working on during the summer. As far as math my experience comes from my math laden schedule at school and my participation in the engineering program, more specifically computer programming, were I learn how to put simple computer "models" into the Visual Basic, programming language.
What I learned my first week
For the first time I learned how to program a web page. Also I got to meet a lot of people that I did not know before. Also this was the first time that I got a chance to use an apple laptop. Now I understand there operation enough to use one in the future or consider buying one, mainly because I never used an apple computer before in my life save the one time that I had to print from a teachers computer or look up a book in the school library. I thought that the OS was user unfriendly but I was mistaken. I also learned the level that the Shodor company operated on and those at thier level such as MIT's library. This is one of the main reasons for my excitement because it means that I know have a "heavy hitter to put on my college and hopefully my educational scholarship applications.
What I learned my second week
This week I learned that graphics, as well as many of the other things that computers are used for to make simple, must be planned out on paper first. I also learned the basic functions of Gimpshop and Inkscape which I plan to use on an upcoming project for school. I have also still hoping to learn more about web page design because it is something that will let me leave an impression on the world. Also during this class I learned workplace ethics and how to appropriatlly carry myself from Mr. Broadnax. The final thing that I learned was how to better operate in the workplace environment and how to interact with my coworkers.
What I learned my third week
This week I learned what I belive will be the most beneficial part of my endevor at Shodor. This week I learned how to do basic programmin using CSS in Text Wrangler. I will use this to work on my personal webpage and some other assignments. Another important skill that I learned in this week was how to teach myself by answering my own questions, through things like internet tutorials and referencing my notes. Specifically I learned how to add backgrounds, margins, font formatting, letter spacing, size and many other things.
What I learned my fourth week
This week I basically got the lesson form week three reinforced and broken down to make it easier for me to understand. I also learned some new tricks that I missed in the previous session. Jonathan, Simon and Bethany helped me a whole lot in this session even with some of the obveous mistakes that I made.
What I learned my fifth week (02/02/07)
This week I completed the agent sheets project and in the process I learned how to better use the application and how to do a random generator. I was helped immensely by Phillip, the interns, and all of the employees of shodor. Next class I am hoping to learn some more things that I can do using both the Agent sheets application and with CSS.
What I learned my sixth week (02/09/07)
This weeks class I have yet to attend however I am looking forward to both the guest speaker and the lesson on Agent Sheets. The speaker is going to give a presentaion how to create an effective presentation, ironically. I am exited because I see this as an opportunity to advance the way that I am seen by others in publick. The lesson on Agent Sheets is supposed to futher elaborate on the capabilities of the program to help the apprntices complete their Moduel 2 Agent Sheets assignment number 2. P.S. I Just was accepted into Theta Phi Psi this past wensday T-T-T-TEE PHI!!! YOU KNOW!!!
What I learned my seventh week (02/16/07 )
This week in class I learned how to use the program Net Logo. It is basically a modeling program much like Agent Sheets however is has less bugs, and is easier to use, not to mention that it allows the user to have more controle over what they do. I also saw some group presentations and learnded some new things to do on the group project that I am currently working on.
