My Experience With Math And Science: October 29, 2007

Science is my favorite suject in school. I enjoy science because I can learn how things work. If someone is a curious person, science is a good interest.

I have been in a program called BOOST since I was in the 6th grade. During the summer between 7th grade and 8th grade, I attended a camp at Duke University, Bioscience and Engineering. This was a 2 week, overnight camp. During the summer between 8th grade and 9th grade, I was in a program called SMASSS. This was located at North Carolina Central University, and it was a 3 week long camp.

In math I have not been in any programs, or at least I dont remember, unlike science. I have been pretty good at math. I sometimes do not understand math as much as I should, or could. I was always in the advanced class, or the class a year ahead of the other classes. I have not had as many math opportunities as science.

Grade/ Summer Science Program
Grade 6/7 BOOST, Techtronics
Grade 7/8 BOOST, Bioscience and Engineering
Grade 8/9 SMASSS, Shodor

What I learned:

Module 1

October 27, 2007

Today, I learned about html's, something I have never done. Html stands for; hyper text markup language. Many websites are htmls's, and everyone created their own. It is difficult to remember the language of html's. The web site W3 Schools helped me relearn some of the codes I did not remember, and learn new codes.

November 17, 2007

I learned about Gimpshop and Inkscape. Inkscape uses vector images. A vector image is an image made up of many mathmatic equations. Gimpshop uses pictures where every pixel is one color. Gimpshop is better for picture editng. Inkscape would be a lot better for logos and things that may require extensive zooming.

December 8, 2007

Today we learned about CSS. A CSS is a cascading style sheet. It is used to, in a nutshell, make an html look pretty. It may also be used to make the layout or scale fonts and certain areas. Without CSS a website isnt really much.

December 22, 2007

Today we learned more of CSS. We also found our groups for the group project.

Module 2

Janurary 19, 2008

Today we learned about agentsheets. They show individual change in a population. Agent sheets is also a very pictorial program so it is easy for visual learners. Matt taught us about Agentsheets today.

February 2, 2008

Patricia taught us more about Agentsheets today. We finished our assignments from the first class. She made sure no one was left out and we were all on the same page.

February 16, 2008

We learned about Netlogo and how it works. It is like agentsheets, but instead of pictures they use code. I am not very good with code, so netlogo is harder to me. It is a good for group change rather than individual.

March 1, 2008

Today we learned more of netlogo and today was a bit of a workday.

Module 3

April 12, 2008

Today we did presentations for our group projects.

April 26, 2008

Today we learned about Excel. I didn't know that Microsoft Excel was used for something other than simply graphing. There are many things it can do, and I find it very similar to Netlogo. The main difference is Excel doesnt use code and it is not very visual, the visual is a graph.

May 3, 2008

Today we learned about Vensim. Vensim is a modeling program. It is a bit like Excel but more visual. It is not as visual as the other modeling programs like Agentsheets and Netlogo.I think learning how to work the program was good. Because it is so hard for me to understand, i find that learning it in class made me proud.
