My Info About Shodor
My knowledge about math and science
I know a lot of things about math and science so I will start with the first thing on the top of my head. I am going to start out with saying that math is my favorite subject and that I am hoping to be a programmer when I finally get out of college. I know a lot of things in math and that includes how to write a program on the calculator, do basic math, do advanced math, and how to work a calculator. Now I am going to talk about my knowledge in science. Science is my second favorite subject and I like what I learn in this class. What I know and have learned in my years in school is the weather cycle, the continental drift and how the plates of the world moved apart, and I also learned different things about evolution.
What I learned in class
October 27, 2007
On October 27, 2007 it was my first day at Shodor. Even though it was my first day I still learned a lot about the program. I learned that we are going to get a stipend when we finish an assignment. I also learned about HTML and how to create my own web page. Of course this is my web page and the program I used to create it was called TextWrangler.
I also learned the three rules of Shodor, which are:
1. Those who work get to keep their jobs.
2. Raises become effective when you do.
3. It's better to let us know than for us to find out.
November 10, 2007
In class on November 10, 2007 I learned about Gimpshop and Inkscape. It was so awesome because I found out that you could edit pictures in Gimpshop, and you can create pictures in Inkscape. I learned that you can create webpage designs in Inkscape. I modified a picture and made a woman's eye. I love the fact that I can now edit pictures at SHODOR.
November 17, 2007
In class on November 17, 2007 I learned a lot. I learned more about Inkscape and Gimpshop and how to edit pictures and create pictures in these programs. I am now going to tell you more about the programs. Gimpshop is a picture editor that allows you to change photos. Let's say that you have a photo of a person. You can do all sorts of things with that picture like copy one of their eye's and paste it in a new layer so it is on their forehead, or you can even make a duplicate of a part of that picture in that same image and there are just all sorts of cool things that you can do with it. The second program was Inkscape. It is a picture maker and is kind of like paint but better. I have created a logo for myself using it and so has everyone else who has gotten that assignment. I also learned about the dress code here at Shodor. Anyway that is what I have learned today.
December 8, 2007
In class on December 8, 2007 we learned about CSS (or in other words, Cascading Style Sheets). If you add CSS to your website, it allows you to have your original html look good, and allowing for more space to make your page look good at the same time. Some things that you can do in CSS to supe-up your page is different backgrounds, text colors, making hyperlinks change when the mouse moves over it, and making the links change size and color when changed.
December 22, 2007
On December 22, 2007 we had a great time. We worked more on our CSS for our web page and we learned a little bit more in depth. We learned how to put the links on the side of the text and make the text move over to make room for the links. Lastly, we worked on our webpage and improved them to make them look like an actual page. I really liked today's class lesson.
Module Two
January 19, 2008
Today the class learned about a program called Agent Sheets. This program is pretty cool because it shows a simulation on how a situation might occur on a confined space and population. Today our example was a sickness simulation with one sick person and a wide population of healthy people. When done, the simulation showed the movement of the people and their interactions with the environment and others. We learned how to create characters that cured the sick ones (doctors), characters that couldn't catch the virus, and characters that made other ones disappear completely.
February 2, 2008
Today was sort of a workday more or less. We got to work more with Agent Sheets and the class also got a new AMC project. We went over the Agent Sheets assignment in class and everyone just fixed the problems that they had. We didn't do much else. Again this was basically a workday for the apprentices.
February 16, 2008
Today, in class, we learned about a new program called NetLogo. This program is a lot like Agent Sheets, but is more based around coding. The interesting thing was that the agents aren't called agents. Instead they are called turtles. We made a model today in class, with the help of the instructor, so that when one turtle touched another one the second one would change color. After the lesson, and lunch, it was time for group website presentations. Everyone had their own little intricate designs on their pages. I loved to see the difference between each page.
March 1, 2008
In class today, we continued with our NetLogo simulations. We fixed any bugs, and added doctors and quarantine spaces. Once we finished up with these simulations, we got our new group projects. We had a choice between two different types of models, and could use either the Agent Sheets program or the NetLogo program. Just in case you are wondering, we got new groups and, judging by the outlines, a whole bunch of work ahead of us.
March 15, 2008
Today was sort of like a workday in class. All we did was work on our Module Two assignments. A whole bunch of people had work from this Module that they hadn't finished yet, so today was a great day to get caught up on any work that was undone. There was no lesson for the day and only an instructor was in there watching us. So we just ripped at our work getting whatever we could do in the time that we had.
April 12, 2008
Today our class didn't do much since the NetLogo presentations were today. Ernie (the head instructor) gave us around an hour to add our finishing touches to the models and that was basically it for the day. Due to the fact that both of my partners weren't here, I couldn't go, so I just watched the presentations. However, I did have to stand up in front of the whole class and tell about a topic that Ernie gave me. It was what I do when I get home from school.
Module Three
March 26, 2008
On March 26, 2007, we learned about Microsoft Excel. Of course I already knew a whole bunch about ecxel, but learned a whole lot more than I already did. For example I did not know that you could put a slider on the worksheet to control how the numbers affected a graph by just sliding the tiny bars back and forth. I also learned more about how to put different calculations into the graph, and that everything is based on one equation: What you have = What you had + or - changes.
May 10, 2008
Today we learned about a program called Vensim. This is a really cool program. This program is kind of like NetLogo for the fact that it can run a model. the only difference is that it doesn't run solely on equations. You can add subjects, and connect them using arrows.
(Workday) May 17, 2008
This week I continued to learn about Vensim. Dr. Panoff helped me out a great deal with this. Today I started and finished my Vensim project. I really like Vensim because of all the free space to create your program. I am hoping to work more with it. However, I still strive to learn more than just a couple of programs here at SHODOR.
(Workday) May 31, 2008
This week was also a workday. I didn't really learn anything new, but I did work on some things that needed revisions. Last week was a week off, so there was no class. The reason for this was because it was Memorial Day weekend. So this week was a very productive week.
Summer Section
Week 1 (July7, 2008 - July 11, 2008)
This week I learned about PHP programming. I learned that PHP is kind of like HTML and CSS together. We learned about how to use different things in PHP. There are different functions such as the recursive function. I did a recursive function for the project in the first class/part of the days of this week. I also learned about modeling. This was sort of a reinforcement of the past modeling knowledge that I have. We simulated a real live zombie invasion outside earlier this week. We also did a project in this class. Zenik and me created a model of the Zombie invasion that was simulated earlier this week.
Week 2 (July 14, 2008 - July 19, 2008)
This week I learned about Sys Admin. This class was cool because I did not know that you could do so much with a computer. I learned a whole bunch like how to edit text, or how to look at files and change them. At the beginning of this week I did not know anything about Sys Admin. Now I can basically do any of the basics that you tell me to do. This week I also learned more on the AMC subject. This time around we had to complete 2 projects instead of just one. I did the Graphit project and the Monty Hall project. I would not say that this class was easy, because then I would be lying, but I did finish before the deadline. I am glad I finished this project on time, because now I am one step closer to the stipend at the end of the summer.
Week 3 (July 14, 2008 - July 19, 2008)
I am most excited about learning Java and subscript this week. I am most excited about this because never realized that you could do so much with some text. I am excited that I finished my projects for this week too. I am hoping that I will keep this up and keep doing my best. I am also excited that I learned more about Modeling. However, this week I learned of a new modeler. It was called WebMo. This was a really cool program because it models what molecules look like. I was experimenting with the different molecules and even found out about some that I didn't know before this week. I like working with WebMo because I can even look to see what the electrical charges are for each angle.
Week 4 (July 28, 2008 - August 1, 2008)
This week I learned about SysAdmin in my first class. My partner Zan and I had to make a virtual server from scratch. I am most excited about this because I like being able to control things. I like being a system administrator because I like being able to access any account that I want to. I am hoping to work more with SysAdmin. I also worked with some more Math and Verbal skills. We were working on a Gerrymandering and figured out how to calculate the compactness of NC's districts. We also had to create discussions for some activities in Interactivate. My topic was linear equations. I am hoping that I will work more with Math and Verbal.
