Modeling The Flu

Overveiw

This modeling project includes both a system model and an agent model. For both these models I am modeling how the Flu spreads in a population.

I chose the Flu as the subject of my models because it is important for public health to be able to understand infectious diseases, especially how the spread through populations. While the Flu hasn't been a terrible threat recently, historically there have been Flu pandemics that were extremely lethal, such as the Influenza of 1918. Since strains of Flu are constantly changing, there is always the risk that a new form could develop that would be resistant to vaccinations and cause an epidemic or pandemic.

Agent Model

For my agent model I used Agent Cubes to model the spread of the Flu.

I made a model similar to Healthy-Sick, except I added a quarantine feature to model how quarantine can impact the spread of an infectious disease.

To compliment this model I made a second Agent Cubes model. This model is a diffusion like model that illustrates the spread of an airborne infection infection.

System Model

For my system model I used Vensim to model the spread of the Flu with healthy and sick populations. To view the model page, click the link below.
