Welcome to my site!

Hi, my name is Akin and I am really excited to be an apprentice at Shodor. Currently I am to be a freshman at Josephine Dobbs Clement Early College High School.

I was born in Chapel Hill, NC but moved with my family--my dad, my mother, and my sister--to Durham, NC when I was five. My sister also participated in Shodor workshops.

People generally think of me as a nice person. In my down time I like to hang out with friends and family, play video games and to read. I also enjoyed being on the track and cross country team at my middle school. I like to play the xylophone in as well as several other percussion instruments.

My favorite subjects include history and biology. History has always interested me because I like learning about other cultures. Biology is really cool because I like learning about different organisms and how they function.

Last summer I participated in a few Shodor workshops. My learning style responds best to hands-on activity, which made Shodor’s workshops a great learning experience. They inspired me to want to become a computer programmer like my grandfather, who was one of the first African-American programmers to work for the state of North Carolina.

I became an apprentice on October 5, 2013. I am really excited to extend my Shodor experience in this way.

Once I obtain my goal of becoming a computer programmer, I would like to create video games and develop programs for people in ned of them. When I think about how much fun I have playing video games, it interests me to create that experience for others. And when I see my cousin, who has autism, playing on an iPad, I hope that I can create that same joy for kids like that all over the globe one day. I believe my experiences at Shodor will bring me closer to my goals.

Anyway, enjoy my site!
