Levi started off the workshop with a brief overview with yesterdays information. The workshop progressed into a discussion of the differences between system and agent based modeling. The main focus of todays workshop was system modeling. Vensim was introduced as the modeling program that the students were to use. Box variables were explained along with rate pipes, knowledge, and arrows. Levi then discussed an example using these aspects of Vensim to describe a population of healthy people that get sick. The students were instructed to open Vensim and began working on a model by following Levis instructions. The students completed their models and ran them successfully. The students went on a short break. After break, Levi transitioned the students into excel and how to model using excel. With excel, the students learned how to create a model to simulate flipping a coin. The students completed an excel model following Levis instructions. He then showed them how to construct a diffusion model using excel. Once the students created the model, they ran it and tinkered with it. They then used this diffusion model to diffuse colors along with the numbers to which they are assigned. The students ran the model and adjusted the parameters so that each cell had a color. Levi explained how this type of computer modeling was related to the rabbits and wolves model. Levi also showed the students the forest fire model and how it relates to the modeling that was taught today. To finish off the day, the students completed their daily reflections.
