The morning started with a general review of the main concepts that the students went over yesterday such as compression, tension and what creates strong structures. After going over review, the students were then tasked with building the biggest structures using the main concepts that they learned the previous day. Each group was given 40 pipe cleaners and 50 stirring straws. With these supplies, the students had to figure out how to connect each piece with each other and come up with the strongest structure. The students were able to create some very unique structures. For example, one group made a structure that was shaped the same as the pentagon building. There was also another group that made a structure entirely out of triangles and shaped it into a square structure trying to maximize stability of the structure as much as possible. After testing all of the structures, the strongest one was the one shaped like a pentagon. Finally, the mentors went over what the lesson plan would be for the rest of the week.
