The class began with and spent most of its time working with Gimp. Before starting any exercises, the class looked over a photo of a butterfly in order to display the uses of all the tools that Gimp contains. The first of the three exercises completed during the class was the editing of a blimp photo. The students were tasked with deleting the background from the photo, using the “magic wand” tool, replacing that background with a gradient sky and some drawn on clouds, and then copying and pasting the blimp all over the newly created background. During this time they also discussed the use of layers. The second exercise involved the Taj Mahal. This time the students were tasked with deleting the background behind the Taj Mahal, replacing it with fireworks, and making the Taj Mahal look lie it was nighttime. The adding of fireworks was simply copying and pasting a fireworks photo and making the Taj Mahal look like it was nighttime was completed through moving the “contrast” and “brightness” slide bars. of the woods to make it look scary. The first step was lowering the saturation and brightness to make the photo more dark and foreboding. Next, the filters “fog,” “coffee stain,” and “old photo” were added. After those three filters were added the photo was deemed sufficiently scary and the students were allowed to have some “free time.” This free time was spent working on either their logos or their web banners, all the while still using Gimp.

The third and final exercise was fairly short, and involved editing a photo
