Today was a continuation of the Engineering workshop. The day prior, I taught civil engineering, using an applet and straw/pin building. The beginning portion of today was spent on the Daredevil activity. First, Ron gave a short presentation on ramps, and gave the example of the man who drove a motorcycle over the Grand Canyon. Then, we began the marble rolling part. A long piece of slit tubing was extended from a height. The purpose was to measure the distance a marble rolled. Afterwards, we used a DataFlyer applet to see if a marble’s release height and where it landed were proportional. Irene taught the majority of the class, though Narga and I shoulder surfed. The students were attentive and worked earnestly, completing the tasks quicker than the apprentice-intern group did. Their results were so accurate that the marble always landed spot-on. The DataFlyer app was not used much during this half of today, but was continued after lunch.

All in all, this was a well-taught lesson. It seemed like the students had fun, and also learned quite a bit about structures and ramps.
