On Day three, the workshop students were introduced to graphics design by using Inkscape to create logos. They started out by learning the difference between vector-based and bitmap-based image editing programs. Vector based images use a series of nodes/paths where bit map images are made up of blocks that can be a different range of certain colors. For example, to make a black and white bit-map based image the black would "fade" into white instead of just having two plain black and white colors. Changing the percent of the color added to the image creates this effect. The class learned that Inkscape was a vector-based program and began to learn the tools in Inkscape by editing images like the Nike and Target logos. Next, They went over functionalities of Inkscape like path editing, unifying to different objects, using the fill and gradient tools to fill a space or create a gradient, and taking an object and being able to edit it by moving nodes. At the end of the day, they created a logo to later be displayed on their website.
