Cameron, the instructor, opened Gimp and started demonstrating the different tools of the program on an image of a butterfly. The class then opened up an image of the Taj Mahal in Gimp and was handed a "cheat sheet" with basic commands and explanations. The students made two layers of the image, one of them being the sky and the other being the rest of the image. The students then saved an image of fireworks from the instructor's website that they would manipulate later; it would eventually replace the sky. The students modified the brightness and contrast of the Taj Mahal so that it looked like night time. The students then replaced the background with the fireworks. They continued manipulating the image by playing around with hue and saturation. Afterwords, the class saved a photo of a forest and played with the posturize option as well as threshold.

After returning from break, the students were given a goal: make a haunted forest postcard. They first made a fog effect, followed up by putting coffee stains on. The class added the old photo effect, and finally, text. After that, the students were instructed to open their logos and make a banner for their website. They simply made a background, inserted some text, and pasted in their logo.
