The workshop students first talked about the measures of central tendency, or the mode, median, and mean, and the advantages and disadvantages of each. They used the Histogram applet on Interactivate to graph data sets and then used the Stem and Leaf applet to find the mean, median, and mode of each data set. Using this they decided which was the best measure of central tendency for each data set. After taking a break, the students learned about the spread of heat using an Excel model. The Excel model had each cell become the average of the cells around it and had a heat source that wouldn't change. The heat spread out from the source of heat until it found an equilibrium and stopped spreading. After using the Excel model, they moved onto a Sick, Infected, Recovered model using Netlogo. They used the model to find the average number of deaths with different fatality rates over 10 tests. The students ended the class by graphing the data they had using the Graphit applet on Interactivate.
