Today's workshop focused on data representation. Rachel taught the students how to differentiate between different types of graphs. The students participated in multiple activities in order to understand when to use specific types of graphical representation. One of the activities that really got the students excited involved creating a stem and leaf plot. The students organized themselves by height and recorded the data. Then they used an Interactivate applet to create the stem and leaf plot.

The second half of the class focused primarily on how to recognize patterns and the different types of strategies that you can use. Rachel focused on this idea in order to have the class create data for a box plot. Many of the students knew basic ideas about the different types of graphs that were covered, but now all of the students have a clear understanding of these graphs and can confidently create them on their own.
