The first half of the class involved using different experiments to find the culprit who left the note on the board. One of the experiments that the workshop students used was to analyze the handwriting left on the board to samples taken from the Shodor office. During that experiment the students used editing software called Gimp to isolate single letters and compare them to the writing on the board. A tool that they used was the crop, cutting as isolation tool. After testing multiple samples they came to a conclusion that an apprentice named Matt wrote the message due to the similarity in the handwriting.

After the writing lab, the students decided to lift fingerprints off of the cookie jar. During the fingerprint lab the students used lego pieces to place their prints, a brush with black lightening powder to show the prints on the legos, and the tape to retrieve prints and place them on paper. After they finished taking their own prints they went to the crime scene to check for fingerprints left behind by the culprits who stole the cookies. They retrieved the prints and uploaded them onto Gimp and observed them to see what kind of ridge pattern the culprits have on their prints. After analysis they came to the conclusion that the culprit might be Alec, another apprentice, but they needed more evidence.
