On the first day of Parallel Programming, Fitz taught the students how and why parallel programming is important. He explained that if several computers were connected, they could solve problems faster than a single computer. Then Fitz went on to tell the students how computers store data and the most efficient ways to access that data.

The BCCD (Bootable Cluster CD) was introduced in this class as a way to experiment and learn how to optimize parallel computing. Students ran GalaxSee with different amounts of processor power to see how parallel programming can make the program run faster.
