In Modeling Your World today, Monte and Sam taught the students in the class about decomposition. Decomposition, or rotting, is the process by which tissues of a dead organism break down into simpler forms of matter. The process is essential for new growth and development of living organisms because it recycles the finite matter that occupies physical space in the biome.

To teach the students about decomposition, the class used an online model called Dead Body Decomposition Model, which was created by Shodor. The class had a discussion about factors that effect decomposition. They concluded from their discussion that body weight, amount of clothing, burial depth, carnivores, humidity, rainfall, temperature, and trauma to body would affect the rate of decomposition.

After break, the class played around with the Dead Body Decomposition Model. They used the model to predict time of deaths and solve real world problems.
