On the final day of forensics, Jenny started off the class by teaching the students about cryptography. They learned about Caesar’s cipher and “mod 26” and how they related to cryptography. After they understood the basics of Caesar’s cipher, they looked at the cryptic note left on Ernie’s desk and spilt into small groups to try and decipher what it said. The students found this to be pretty tricky at first, but after a while, they understood that they were working with a linear function. Once a few of the letters were discovered, students caught on and worked as a class to figure out what the entire note said.

After they knew the contents of the note, they pieced together all the evidence and came up with conclusions about who really sent the virus out to everyone and why. They listed all the possible suspects and took a vote. The majority of people voted that Joel was the culprit, but a few people voted for Jenny and Eric. In the end, Darian told them the truth- that there was competition in the office because only one person would get a raise, so Joel created the virus to take out his competitors.
