On Thursday, the Engineers In Training students got to work on the "In Straws We Trussed" assignment. This workshop allowed the students to learn about structural engineering. The students learned what tension and compression were through the use of a sponge. They then got to create virtual bridges through the use of a bridge designer applet. After learning how to make a virtual bridge, the engineers got to compete in a design competition against each other to see who could make the tallest, most structurally sound tower. Using straws and pins only, they had to see how to make a tower that was both tall and able to support a cup full of marbles.
