The following reports were written by members of Engineers in Training during the first day of the program. Some elements may have been removed/edited for various reasons, but the text that remains is in the student's own words.

Leo

in engineers in training class today we did stuff on tension and compression and how trusses work when pressure is applied. the room was too cold though.

William

It was good.

Langston

I had a great time ,but the air was frezzing.

Alex

I learned that bridges are built with trusses. they bend and flux with the pressure that is aplied by objects and the weather. i like that this camp provided snacks and had youger teachers.

Lateya

Today I learned about compression and tension.I had alot of fun today and i want to tell everyone about it.

Alex

Today in Engineers in Training, we looked at toppling figures and Trusses. First, we were asked to build a few lego structures, and to see whether they stood or fell. We then, using computer models, found that the center of gravity had to be above a part of the base, or else the structure would topple over. Then, after snack, we started looking at trusses, and learned what the words "compression", "tension", and "torsion" meant. We looked at some examples of these, and finished with a computer model.

Will

this class was very fun today becuse we were dealing with nodes and how their fixed in to the ground and for the other side of the truss it should be a rolling horizantal nodeso th bridge whont brake.

Denz'l

I really liked my first day at Shodor.

Elijah

I think this camp is great because they explaine things through demeonstrations. they also alow us to learn through projects

Ann

I liked being able to use the computers. I also liked having hands-on activities to make things more interesting. I didn't really dislike anything.
