In the beginning, the students are paired up and given a piece of string, 4 thumb tacks, graph paper, and 4 cut out small squared shaped pieces of cardboard. The situation is that farmers want as much grass as possible within the fence. On their graph paper, the little squares represent the grass. With the tools they were given, the students have to figure out what shape will hold the most grass, or in their case squares. Then they went to a program designed by Garrett called Graphit, where they learned about ordered pairs. Later after break, each student built a box, using graph paper to see which bow would hold the most amount of sand an which bow would hold the least amount, then they graphed their findings using Graphit. Then something exciting happened. For weeks Garrett has been building beams, and nobody knew what they were for. He made them out of wax for the class to later balance bricks on. The students were into that.
