Day 3
Bob Gotwals started out the day with a rope trick. He taught them that the trick was to keep your hand going either straight up and down or straight side-to-side. Bob then lead into a discussion of the human genome by going over analogies. He used the analogy that a cookbook is to food, as the genome is to living organisms. The class then went on to learn more about chromosomes, genes, and nucleotides. The class used supercomputers in London, Maryland, and Illinois to do research on different genes, and various hereditary diseases. The diseases were Huntington Chorea, Hemophilia, and Sickle Cell Anemia. They found that even one wrong letter in a gene sequence can have disastrous consequences and create major mutations. The class then watched a movie called "DNA The Secret of Life" which was made for the 50th anniversary of the discovery of DNA. The movie went through what DNA is, and how DNA controls all of life. The class was then given the task of coming up with an idea for a project. They were going to try and come up with a model, use an existing model, or modify a model that had something to do with medicine, which they could then present to the class on Friday. The kids eagerly began doing research for the rest of the afternoon.
