This year-round program will address the challenge of providing high quality extracurricular science educational experiences to high school students who live in a rural, economically depressed setting. The objectives of the program are to increase students’ interest in the study of science, and to increase their proficiency in the use of science process skills and thought processes. The designed curriculum will use hands-on and application-based activities in field and laboratory inquiry experiences. Guest lecturers will provide students with opportunities to interact with working scientists and to learn more about careers in science. Extended field trips will give students the opportunity to learn more about educational opportunities outside their immediate communities. Ultimately, the activities of the SCIENCE Club Project will promote an awareness of both local and global environmental issues and a deeper appreciation of the natural world.
