This program-a collaborative effort of SciWorks and the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem-creates community-based science clubs for disadvantaged middle school and high school students in four of the city's housing projects. The clubs build on the resources of the SciWorks musuem to serve up to 30 middle school students and their five teen "mentors". Activities are designed to show students how science relates to their lives and to give them hands-on experience. Examples include studying the vegetation on a field trip along the Blue Ridge Parkway; studying physical science and electricity through a tour of Tanglewood Park; building a bridge out of a pound of spaghetti and glue; and planning and cooking a dinner, which involves determining the correct proportions for each ingredient.
